A Manly Mentality

12-23-2010

Hi Guys

I want to connect the dots between and among the last three pieces that have been posted.

Which are:

  1. The Secret Craft of Warriorhood;

  2. Prudence or the Pill; and

  3. The Mingling of ManSweat and ManBlood

And, if you haven't yet read them, please do read them;

and note that they're meant to be read in that order -- that is, Secret Craft first and ManSweat third.

Now:

In The Secret Craft of Warriorhood, we take a look at the work of a classicist named Lendon, who confirms what I've said about the martial and military function of male-male Love among the Greeks, and particularly among the Spartans.

Did I need for him to confirm that?

No -- I didn't.

It's well-known.

But it certainly doesn't hurt for you to hear what he has to say.

Indeed, it's important that you do:

[The Theban use of Love] relationships between men as a font of military excellence is a transparent borrowing from Sparta, where such relationships were institutionalized, played a large role in the training of boys, and were thought to contribute to bravery in combat. At Sparta lover and beloved stood beside each other in the hoplite line; before battle the Spartans sacrificed to Eros, to love.

We also look, in that post, at Lucian's description of Warrior Training in Athens in the 6th century BC. And you can see how demanding it was, and how it was designed to create Warriors who were "used to hard work, to stand up to blows face to face, and not to yield through fear of injury":

So, and again -- the Training was designed to create Warriors who were "used to hard work, to stand up to blows face to face, and not to yield through fear of injury";

and who welcomed Strife.

As Lucian says, through this Training, which is basically Training in Manliness through Fight Sport,

eagerness for danger creeps into their souls [. . . and they fall] in love with courage and struggle.

And that's essential.

It's essential that the Warrior Love Courage and Struggle.

And that his Training deepen that Love.

As Warrior NW said to me in a recent email:

Fight Sport requires the male to be aggressive, decisive, quick thinking, merciless, until the match is over, and most of all to have Courage -- willingness to face the unknown, willingness to risk defeat. NO guarantees. It is a fight. It IS aggression. It IS a mentality...a Manly Mentality. Males have Nature's gift of testicles to do this. Use that gift, or lose it.

NW: Fight Sport requires most of all Courage.

Lucian: The Fighter/Warrior must be in Love with Courage and Struggle.

No disagreement, no ambiguity, there.

What both Men are describing is, as NW says, A Manly Mentality, a Love of Courage and Struggle.

Now:

What Lendon says, and again, which we already knew, is that the Spartan regime of Warrior Training -- the Agogé -- was far more systematic than in the other Greek city-states.

But that the other states did, eventually, seek to emulate what the Spartans did -- which was, by the way, radical for its time.

As Werner Jaeger says:

The rest of the Greeks saw with astonishment and admiration how every institution in Sparta served the same purpose -- to make Spartan citizens the best soldiers in the world. They understood very well that this was not done by incessant drilling and manoeuvring, but by moulding the character from earliest childhood. This education was not only military. It was political and moral in the broadest sense ...

The Spartan state deliberately made Eros [male-male love] a factor, and an important factor, in its agogé.

Once again, Prof Lendon:

[The Thebans' use of] relationships between men as a font of military excellence is a transparent borrowing from Sparta, where such relationships were institutionalized, played a large role in the training of boys, and were thought to contribute to bravery in combat. At Sparta lover and beloved stood beside each other in the hoplite line; before battle the Spartans sacrificed to Eros, to love.

So -- and the core point:

In the ancient world, and in archaic and classical Greece (776 to 323 BC) in particular, same-sex relationships between Men, that is, male-male and Man2Man Love Affairs, were seen as "a font of military excellence."

Athenian Warrior-Lovers

The basic idea was that Warrior-Lovers would compete to show who was the bravest in battle.

And thus make armies more formidable.

That was the function of male-male.

And such relationships, as hopefully you can see and have been able to figure out, were a part, and a prominent part, of the MAJORITY culture.

They weren't secret, they weren't hidden, they weren't in any way deviant.

Zeus and Hera with the other Gods on Olympos
Zeus' male beloved, Ganymedes, stands between them

They were a major part of a Manly and Masculinist culture -- which was also quite brilliant.

As is made abundantly clear in Prudence or the Pill.

Where I quote at some length from both Plato's and Xenophon's memoirs of Sokrates.

Through those memoirs, we visit an all-male dinner party at which the guest of honor is a "boy" -- actually he's about sixteen -- named Autolycus, who's just been victorious in Pankration at a big religious-athletic festival in Athens.

The dinner party is being given by the Man, Callias, who's in Love with him, and Sokrates says that ALL the MEN there have been involved in Manly Love.

It's NORMATIVE.

And it's Masculine.

Sokrates makes a point of saying that Autolycus' victory in Pankration is a Manly one, that it's evidence of "virile courage," as well as stamina and physical strength, and that for those reasons Autolycus is a worthy love object.

A Boy Victor in Fight Sport in the Panathenaic Games

And, says Sokrates, it reflects well on Callias that he's in love with such a Manly youth -- who in addition demonstrates the Manly moral quality of "sophrosyne" -- self-control, temperance, prudence.

Now, like I said, this is a pic of a Victor in Fight Sport in the Panathenaic Games.

We know he's a Victor because he wears a wreath and carries a jar of olive oil, which was a prize in the Panathenaic Games; and his physique -- his broad chest and strong legs and buttocks -- tells us he was a Fighter.

And notice that the youth's testicles are prominently displayed.

As they almost invariably are in Greek art.

Why?

Because -- the works of art constitute cultural messages.

And --

This is a Dominant Culture, a Majority Culture, a Masculinist Culture -- of Heroic Nude Testicular Masculinity:

I repeat:

The Greeks and then the Romans lived in a dominant culture of Heroic, Nude, Testicular, Masculinity.

And that culture, as every culture does, produced cultural messages --

in this case, cultural messages about the value of Heroic, Nude, Testicular, Masculinity --

in the form of art -- statues and paintings.

And writing -- as when Sokrates says of the Victor in Pankration that he's demonstrated "physical strength and stamina, virile courage and sobriety" -- and is thus worthy of being Loved by another Man.

That too is a cultural message.

As is Plato's remark that

There is no sort of Valour more respected by the Gods than this which comes of Manly Love.

Another cultural message.

As is this statement from Plutarch:

Of all the many Manly lovers there were and have been, do you know of a single one who surrendered his beloved, even to gain favor from Zeus? I do not.

~Erotikos 760B

As is this painting of Achilles' tending to his Lover Patroclus' wound:

A cultural message.

We have a great many of them from ancient Greece.

And they are UNEQUIVOCAL.

So -- it's VERY IMPORTANT that you understand:

That in ancient Greece, a Martial, Masculine, and "Monogamous" --that is, 100% Faithful -- form of male-male was a Major part of the dominant and majority Masculinist culture.

That's how and what it was.

And that it was in no way deviant.

I know you're used to thinking of male-male as deviant -- because you have all your life.

But in ancient Greece, male-male which was Masculine, Martial, Faithful, and Phallic -- was not deviant.

In Prudence or the Pill, I also quote from Plato's Sokratic dialogue Gorgias.

In which Sokrates specifically condemns anal -- as well as promiscuity.

The Gorgias is a major Sokratic dialogue.

Which means that it's a major work of the Western canon.

And it hinges upon Sokrates' condemnation of anal.

Which is unequivocal.

That too is a cultural message.

So -- the values which we put forward in The Man2Man Alliance are the values of the ancient Greeks.

Frot

Fidelity

Manliness

Virtue

Valour

And those were majoritarian values.

And will be -- maybe, if you work at it -- again.

Let's compare and contrast those values and the culture from which they came --

with analism.

Which, if you're gay-identified, you think of as your "majority" culture, but which in reality is a minority and *deviant* subculture throughout the world.

Remember, first off, that analism exists, as a subculture, within a majority culture which has been heterosexualized.

It's as my foreign friend says:

Analism emerges from the trash heap created by the heterosexualised society to contain the mutilated / negativised remnants of male-male that survives after its intense oppression in the mainstream...

So:

Male-Male Love, Affection, Intimacy, and Sex -- are INTENSELY oppressed in our mainstream, heterosexualized, society.

Analism appears on the fringes of that society -- in the trash heap -- and contains the mutilated and negativised remnants of male-male.

What do we mean by mutilated and negativised?

Well, just look at the values of analism -- they're the negative of the values of male-male when they're part of Masculinist and Majority culture, a culture of Manly Love:

MANLY LOVE

phallus

fidelity

masculinity

equality

freedom

pleasure

health

VIRTUE

LIFE

analism

anus

promiscuity

effeminacy

submission

subjugation

pain

disease

vice

death

So:

Analism -- which is the most visible form of male-male today -- is a minority and deviant subculture.

And it's negative and "oppositional."

It takes traditional Male-Male and Manly Values such as Masculinity, Fidelity, and Phallus -- and turns them on their head:

Masculinity becomes effeminacy;

Fidelity promiscuity;

Phallus -- anus.

Again -- the attributes of Manly Love are all positives: Phallus, Fidelity, Masculinity, Equality, Freedom, Pleasure, Health, Virtue, Life.

The attributes of analism are the opposites and negatives of these positives: anus, promiscuity, effeminacy, submission, subjugation, pain, disease, vice, death.

And this conflict between Life and death, Virtue and vice is crucial to understanding the difference between the Majority Culture of Manly Love, and the deviant subculture of analism.

In the ancient world, Virtue is a Manly attribute, the result of physical hard work and moral discipline.

This is made very clear in the Parable of Herakles at the Cross-roads, which is recounted by Sokrates in Xenophon's Memorobilia, and in which the harlot -- whore -- vice is specifically taxed with "using men as women."

And the Greek word for vice is "kakia," which derives DIRECTLY from the Greek word for human waste / shit -- kake.

And this is something we, unfortunately, know all too well in our contemporary world --

vice -- shitsex -- uses males as females.

While the Greek word for Virtue is Areté -- which as we'll discuss below, derives DIRECTLY from ARES -- the God of Manliness and Manhood.

This could not be more plain.

Among the Greeks, the word for vice -- kakia -- derives from the word for human waste -- shit;

and anal penetration -- shitsex -- is a prime example of vice.

And I do mean prime: Sokrates characterizes anal as "terrible, shameful, and wretched."

The word for Virtue, by contrast, derives from the name of the Warrior God -- Ares;

as do many other words which are positives, such as aristeia -- Heroism -- and aristos -- Best.

Why?

Because, as the standard Greek-English Lexicon says, "the first notion of goodness is that of manhood, bravery in war; cf. Lat. virtus."

And, adds the Lexicon, this applies especially to "manly qualities, manhood, valour, prowess, Hom., Hdt. (like Lat. vir-tus, from vir)."

So:

Vice -- which is linked directly to anal penetration -- is shitty.

Shitty is bad.

Virtue -- which is linked directly to the Warrior God -- is Manly.

Manly is Good.

As Virtue says in the parable:

I company with Gods and Good Men, and no fair deed of God or Man is done without my aid. I am first in honour among the Gods and among Men that are akin to me: to craftsmen a beloved fellow-worker, to masters a faithful guardian of the house, to servants a kindly protector: good helpmate in the toils of peace, staunch ally in the deeds of war, best partner in friendship.

. . .

For of all things good and fair, the Gods give nothing to Man without toil and effort. If you want the favour of the Gods, you must worship the Gods: if you desire the love of friends, you must do good to your friends: if you covet honour from a city, you must aid that city: if you are fain to win the admiration of all Hellas for virtue, you must strive to do good to Hellas: if you want land to yield you fruits in abundance, you must cultivate that land: if you are resolved to get wealth from flocks, you must care for those flocks: if you essay to grow great through war and want power to liberate your friends and subdue your foes, you must learn the arts of war from those who know them and must practise their right use: and if you want your body to be strong, you must accustom your body to be the servant of your mind, and train it with toil and sweat.

Virtue then is the result of hard work and moral discipline -- of a Manly Mentality.

Manly Love too is the result of hard work and moral discipline -- and of a Manly Mentality.

Remember Autolycus, the, as NW says, ManBoy, whose Victory in Pankration has made him Worthy of being Loved.

Autolycus had to train long and hard in order to win that Victory;

at the same time displaying the Virtue of sophrosyne -- self-control, moderation, prudence.

So -- in this Culture of Manly Mentality and Manly Love, Virtue, which is latent in the male, is brought forward through a combination of hard physical work -- often in Fight Sport -- and moral training.

The moral training centers on the Five Virtues of Piety, Courage, Self-Control, Justice, and Wisdom --

which are expressed in Manly Love as Frot, Fidelity, Manliness, Virtue, and Valour.

And, again, that Culture of Manly Love is a Majority Culture.

A Culture of Manly Mentality.

That Majority and Manly Culture, as I've said, and as you can see in the parable, is Rigorous -- and Virtuous.

While analism is a minority subculture.

One which is both flaccid and vicious -- vice-ious.

In addition, analism denies what the ancient Greeks expressed without even thinking about it -- and that is, the essentially "bi-sexual" nature of human beings.

In ancient Greece, to paraphrase eminent classicist KJ Dover,

[The Greeks] did not consider male-male relations incompatible with concurrent male-female relations or with marriage...

In other words, most people, and particularly Men, were involved in concurrent relationships with their wives or other Women, and other Men.

But in America today, "sexual orientation" rules, and "homosexuals" are considered to belong to what is, in effect a different species.

Even though academics and physicians such as Richard Horton point out that there's no rational basis for such a belief:

[B]oth Hamer and LeVay . . ., in spite of their qualifications, adopt the idea of the homosexual as a physical "species" different from the heterosexual. But there are no convincing historical grounds for this view.

Historian Jonathan Ned Katz asserts that

Contrary to today's bio-belief, the heterosexual/homosexual binary is not in nature, but is socially constructed, therefore deconstructable.

Sociologist Eric Anderson of the University of Bath in England notes that

Animals don't do sexual identity. They just do sex.

[And, he adds, in humans,]

the categories of gay and straight are socially constructed.

While Professor Joan Roughgarden of Stanford University, quoted in Scientific American in 2008, says:

We should be calling humans bisexual because this idea of exclusive homosexuality is not accurate of people. Homosexuality is mixed in with heterosexuality across cultures and history.

So -- the idea of "sexual orientation" as immutable is increasingly under attack.

But not in the "gay" community.

There, sexual orientation and its perverse and perverted practices are not only heavily defended, but actively exported to the "non-gay" population.

Something we could see very clearly in Prudence or the Pill.

Where Pope Benedict actually endorsed condoms, an analist and failed solution, to prevent AIDS, using the example of a "homosexual" prostitute who elects to use a condom.

So -- that exporting of "gay" values to the mainstream -- to the Church, to marriage, to the military -- makes it all the more urgent that you choose.

Which culture is yours?

The culture of Manliness and Manhood?

The culture of Fidelity and Frot, Virtue and Valour?

Or the subculture of anal, promiscuity, effeminacy, and every other perversion?

You need to decide.

Because a Masculine and Majority Culture of Manly Love is life-loving, sun-loving, light-loving.

It doesn't get lost in the darkness and evil of anal, promiscuity, and effeminacy.

Moreover, analist institutions consistently fail Men.

You.

They fail you.

Whether they're an ersatz religion like Radical Faeries, or a group calling itself Alternative Gays -- which isn't alternative at all -- or The Jacks, which claims to be devoted to Phallic Sex between Men, but which encourages promiscuity and whose "events" are littered with femmies and buttboys pushing anal and effeminacy --

They fail you.

Those are the lessons of Polyamorous in Portland, of ManSweat and ManBlood, and of literally thousands of other posts on our MAN2MAN Alliance site.

In Polyamorous in Portland, one of our Frot guys gets bamboozled by an analist, who claims to love him, who says they needn't ever do anal, who boasts of being a Buddhist and compassionate.

They meet at a "gay spirituality" group called the Radical Faeries.

And at first everything's great.

The sex is good

sex with him drains me! It usually takes me about two days to recover. He's amazing!
And the analist wines and dines him
On my birthday he took me to the best restaurant in Portland. Then he took me to the theatre and then he took me home and took me on the living room floor.

Friday night he took me to another of the best restaurants in town for wine, appetizers and then of course back to his place.

Of course the guy isn't Faithful, or even close to Faithful:

I am now in a Polyamorous relationship. He has told me about the other two men he is dating and I am totally OK with that. He makes me feel like I am the only one.

. . .

He still has his other lovers. But I have never been so fulfilled by a man. Never. He is truly amazing.

And then, and not surprisingly, things begin to sour.

For within just three nights the analist is demanding anal, and growing angry and coercive when it's denied.

As our Frot guy tells me in an email sent a year after he'd first met his polyamorous "partner."

Since I've last written you, I've lost my apartment in Portland, my cat of 13 years, most everything I owned, and have been unemployed for just over two years.

The man I was seeing in Portland really opened my eyes. On our first few nights together he made love to me like we'd been together for years. Then he started getting angry because I wouldn't give him anal sex. Our love making dropped off dramatically after that, even though he had other men who gave it to him.

Then as I was fast approaching homelessness, he refused to let me move into his house. With the spare room. That he never uses.

So:

The buttboy lied to our guy when he said he wouldn't ask for anal.

It was just a ploy.

Within just a few nights he began demanding it.

Then, when our Frot guy was nearing homelessness, the analist refused to let him stay in a vacant room in his house, which was "decked out in Buddhist decor."

Of course, one major problem for our Frot guy was that the buttqueen was also "seeing" other males.

And fucking them of course.

So he felt neither need nor Buddhist obligation when our guy became homeless.

Because our guy, after all, was just a "trick" to him -- a source of sex.

But that's what analism is -- a constant source of sex.

That's what the "Radical Faeries" are -- a source not of spirituality, but of sex.

Buttsex.

Which is painsex, shitsex, diseasesex, deathsex.

So -- in Polyamorous in Portland, an analist institution -- the Radical Faeries -- misleads and betrays our guy.

While in ManSweat and ManBlood, Warrior NW, who's been going to the Jacks, an analist JO club, realizes that the promiscuity, the effeminacy, the constant demands for anal -- just don't work for him:

I went to a group JO event [at "The Jacks"] on Sunday. And I realized there that I've lost interest in that stuff. I was thinking about that while at the event.

I realized that what has always turned me on was the sensation of some kind of aggression from another dude while going cock2cock. So many of the guys there are not manly enough for me. AND a number of them are into anal and looking to pick someone up for it, even though it's strictly not allowed at an event. It becomes a total turn off. Some guys will ask you if you ever fuck. Butt fuckers are persistent. I always reject them in an instant.

For me, I get a hard cock when I tie-up with some guy who has biceps, pecs, and good trapezius muscles like a wrestler. And we start muscling each other around buck naked. THEN my cock gets excited. I just cannot get turned up by a thin, unmanly guy, ESPECIALLY if he acts femmy. It totally turns me off. I have thought that way since I was a very small boy. It's why wrestling around on the grass in grade school, or wrestling on the mats in high school or college always hardened up my cock.

I can't see it any other way.

Right.

WARRIOR NW can't see it any other way.

Because there's no other way to see it.

NW is a MAN.

He needs Manliness in his Life.

For him, contact with the un-Manly is deadening.

Soul-destroying.

He understands that Manliness is a Divine Principle.

And Manhood is Divine Gift.

And he can no longer tolerate being around "males" who deny both Manliness and Manhood.

Let's come back to Prudence or the Pill.

We saw there that while the pope had okayed condoms, he also spoke of and warned against the "banalization of sexuality."

What did he mean by that?

Well, the pope is an intellectual, and not just an intellectual, but a German intellectual.

Which means that when he says "banal," he's referencing a phrase by another German intellectual, a German-Jewish intellectual, Hannah Arendt, who, in describing those who ran the Nazi extermination camps, spoke of "the banality of evil."

She was describing Nazi bureaucrats like Adolf Eichmann, a colorless and dull functionary, who nevertheless plotted and carried out the mass murder of European Jewry, moving from machine guns and mass graves to gas chambers and crematoriums.

"The banalization of sexuality."

That's the pope's phrase.

But when you look at a picture like this one of fist-fucking:

Does it look banal to you?

Or evil?

Well, look at this picture:

Fist-fucking severely traumatizes the anus and rectum.

It makes both significantly more vulnerable to disease.

Which is why the first cases of AIDS were found among gay-identified males into fisting.

Of course, you don't need fisting to transmit HIV.

Ordinary, run-of-the-mill anal penetration will do that just fine.

And it does.

Every day.

In America alone, each and every day, 73 gay-identified males callously and murderously infect 73 other gay-identified males with HIV -- via anal penetration.

It's the anal.

But -- and that said -- given the vast number of anally-transmitted diseases, and the vulnerability of the anus and rectum when penetrated just by a penis, clearly this

is evil.

Perhaps it seems banal to the pope.

But it's evil.

You can see the result in this picture:

The photo was taken at a "drag" "festival" called Wigstock.

It's an annual event, and for that reason I don't have a date on the pic -- it was, most likely, taken either in '87 or in '94.

But here you see the intersection of anal with effeminacy:

Death.

That's what happens.

Effeminacy leads to anal.

Anal leads to death.

Or anal leads to effeminacy.

And effeminacy leads to death.

Toss in promiscuity, a key component of analism, and this is what you've got:

The three core elements of analism feed upon and reinforce each other.

And the result is death.

Death on a massive scale.

Today we're approaching 600,000 deaths in America alone.

Far more than 25 million worldwide.

It's horrible.

But it's real.

It really happened.

And it goes on happening:

What about effeminacy?

The organizers of Wigstock claim that it's a "celebration" of drag.

Maybe.

But what it's really about is hating Women:

Analism tries to ignore the Woman-hating at its core.

So do feminists.

They need their effeminizing gay-identified male allies -- for the moment at least.

So they ignore the implications of drag and cheer it on.

But drag degrades Women every bit as much as it degrades Men.

Do you think the Spartans -- who honored both Men and Women -- did drag?

And where would you rather be?

Present-day America?

Or Sparta?

Sparta.

Your own, Manly, Sparta.

Let's come back to NW's most recent email.

The context is that he'd had to go to dinner, with a relative, to a priest's house.

A Catholic priest.

It's a gathering of the people who help do the mass: the musicians, the altar boys and girls (They're adults of course. I don't think they're called that anymore.), the ushers, etc.

Father really is a nice guy and all. But the whole thing is so un-manly. You can really tell what level of manliness people are by the subjects they talk about while they eat, and such. And since it's mixed company of men and women, that REALLY controls the topics of conversation; NO manly subjects can be talked about at all in that situation.

You can never talk fights, balls, pussy, tits, working out, pecs, abs, etc. We can talk classical music, flowers, gardening, basketball, football, baseball, and anything else that is really non-confrontational. We can talk about anything that is NOT manly.

It's not that these people are "gay, straight, blah, blah, blah." It's a situation of un-manliness about them. ALL of them.

It stresses me so much to be around that, since I grew up around it. Growing up in Catholic schools, we were all constantly encouraged to be what I called Goodie-Boys all the time. No fights, no rough-housing, no aggression. It was a constant, which I now despise. It is a constant that I see in these people I had dinner with last night. I don't hate THEM; I hate the un-manliness I see in them. I KNOW I would have ended up as one of THEM if I had not done wrestling and fighting like I did.

It is EASY...VERY EASY...to become a Fem. VERY EASY.

And get this: they asked me if I want to be an usher at mass.

CAN YOU FUCKING BELIEVE THAT? I said no.

They think I'm one of them already. THAT really stems from the Catholic School upbringing I had. Catholic schools used to beat good manners into kids one way or another. So we all learned how to behave in specific settings. It became automatic. It is learned behavior.

So I know how to act in a dinner setting, even though I may not want to be in that setting.

Personally I can't stand being in church or in that femmy setting. But I can see why women and men like that peaceful non-aggressive setting. It is one of low light, beautiful Christmas decorations, candles, soft classical music, fine china and linen. The table we ate on is inlaid wood probably costing thousands of dollars (I think it was once donated to the priest's house). It is a setting that is totally lacking in any need for courage.

It is as far from Spartan as anything could possibly ever get.

Not having courage is easy, and therefore easy to slip into. I can see it especially in mixed company of men and women.

Courage and love of aggression is built into the male DNA, but it has to be brought out of the male, in early development. I believe that it CAN be done later, but it becomes more difficult.

(I found that out from trying to teach wrestling to adults at the wrestling club that I was once part of. Teaching an adult male who has never fought or had to wrestle with another boy in his life, that tangling and tussling with another dude on the center of a wrestling mat is NOT a game requires a LOT of patience. Some of these guys I coached never caught on. Some of them were infatuated by wrestling, but they never could DO it. Wrestling requires the male to be aggressive, decisive, quick thinking, merciless, until the match is over, and most of all to have Courage--willingness to face the unknown, willingness to risk defeat. NO guarantees. It is a fight. It IS aggression. It IS a mentality...a Manly Mentality. Males have Nature's gift of testicles to do this. Use that gift, or lose it.)

Being in that un-masculine Catholic setting is an easy retreat from the real world. It is a sanctuary....a very protected setting....LIKE A WOMB. It is easy to hide in a church setting.

12 years in a Catholic church and Catholic schools was like 12 years in a Catholic Womb. For me, stepping out of a Catholic school was like stepping outside into a blizzard or wind storm at 18 years of age.

I was thinking of this the whole time I was sitting at the dinner table with these folks at the priest's house. Even while in conversation with people there, I was thinking this.

HOW DID A WESTERN CULTURE THAT WAS SO BUILT ON MANLINESS, BECOME SO SO SO SO SO FEMMY?

I think that part of it is that men in U.S. History were probably not even aware of their own manliness---a manliness that they inherited from their Western Heritage. The majority of men were probably just Manly Men on a mission to built a nation. In other words, they did not reflect on their manliness as THE great thing that it is. They simply WERE manly men going about their business of nation building.

Probably AFTER WW2, is when the unraveling of manliness began to accelerate, for various reasons.

I will say that it is educational to sit through the Catholic Mass ritual, and to sit through a gathering of unmanly people. It is better to NOT be ignorant of the rapid growth of feminess in men in American Life.

Be aware. Be aware. Be aware.

This is what I said to him in reply:

NW:

It stresses me so much to be around that, since I grew up around it.

Bill: Yeah -- I'm sure it's very stressful.

NW:

Growing up in Catholic schools, we were all constantly encouraged to be what I called Goodie-Boys all the time. No fights, no rough-housing, no aggression.

Bill:

Right.

That's the Church.

The truth is NW, that the Church is VERY aggressive in pursuing its own interests.

But it wants its flock to be passive.

And easily manipulated. It was a constant, which I now despise. It is a constant that I see in these people I had dinner with last night. I don't hate THEM; I hate the un-manliness I see in them.

Right.

I KNOW I would have ended up as one of THEM if I had not done wrestling and fighting like I did.

EXACTLY!!!

That's the KEY point.

And that's what our guys do NOT understand.

It isn't enough to want something.

You have to DO something.

And in this case that means -- FIGHT.

They need to learn how to FIGHT.

It is EASY...VERY EASY...to become a Fem. VERY EASY.

Right!

Because everything in this society encourages that.

And get this: they asked me if I want to be an usher at mass. CAN YOU FUCKING BELIEVE THAT? I said no.

Good!

They think I'm one of them already. THAT really stems from the Catholic School upbringing I had. Catholic schools used to beat good manners into kids one way or another. So we all learned how to behave in specific settings. It became automatic. It is learned behavior.

Right.

So I know how to act in a dinner setting, even though I may not want to be in that setting.

I understand.

Personally I can't stand being in church or in that femmy setting. But I can see why women and men like that peaceful non-aggressive setting. It is one of low light, beautiful Christmas decorations, candles, soft classical music, fine china and linen.

Right.

The table we ate on is inlaid wood probably costing thousands of dollars (I think it was once donated to the priest's house).

Yes.

The Church uses its wealth to shock and awe its parishoners.

Even though Jesus was EXTREMELY opposed to wealth.

In the gospels, he spends most of his time attacking wealth.

He didn't like it.

NO ethical teacher does.

NO ethical teacher supports wealth -- unless it's completely and equally distributed.

Recently someone wrote to me complaining that my saying such things was "class warfare."

Well, if that's true, Jesus was into class warfare, Sokrates was into class warfare, Buddha, Confucius, Lycurgus, Plato, the Hebrew prophets -- all into class warfare.

Maybe the problem is the rich and greedy -- who won't share even when they can see terrible need.

Here's the fact though:

When resources are reasonably and evenly distributed -- there is no "class warfare."

Class warfare, so-called, is a symptom of a society which is out of joint.

As such, it's a natural phenomenon.

You can deplore that it's spoken of.

Or stop up your ears, or whatever.

But when income is equitable -- it doesn't exist.

So -- Sparta is the societal ideal for this Alliance.

And Sparta was extraordinarily stable.

Why?

Because the Spartans were social levelers.

When income distribution became too unequal, when just a handful of rich dominated the poor, the Spartan law-giver, Lycurgus, with the support of his people, re-divided and re-distributed the land so that each Spartan had an equal share.

He then devised institutions, including the Phiditia, the Men's Messes, to which ALL contributed and at which ALL ate the SAME food, to keep the state equal.

Life at Sparta then became both austere and equal.

Plato called Sparta a Timocracy, Tima being Honour, and Sparta being a Rule of Honour, in which Valour replaced wealth as the determinant of social status:

The life of a Spartan male was a life of discipline, self-denial, and simplicity. The Spartans viewed themselves as the true inheritors of the Greek tradition. They did not surround themselves with luxuries, expensive foods, or opportunities for [meaningless] leisure. And this, I think, is the key to understanding the Spartans. . . . Discipline, simplicity, and self-denial always remained ideals in the Greek and Roman worlds; civilization was often seen as bringing disorder, ennervation, weakness, and a decline in moral values. The Spartan, however, could point to Spartan society and argue that moral values and human courage and strength was as great as it was before civilization. Spartan society, then, exercised a profound pull on the surrounding city-states who admired the simplicity, discipline, and order of Spartan life.

And, I would add, its stability.

During a period when all the other city-states went from having Kings to Tyrants to Oligarchies to Democracies and back to Oligarchies again, changes accompanied by a great deal of turmoil and unrest, Sparta was stable.

Its goverment was a constitutional monarchy with two kings, a Warrior Assembly, an elected Council of Elders, and five elected ephors who served for one year only.

Spartan life emphasized sharing, whether it was of horses or wives.

And Spartan Men -- Warriors -- called each other Equals.

It was that combination of equality, austerity, and stability which enabled the Spartans to play the role of peacemaker among the other city-states, and most importantly, to expel the pro-Persian tyrants throughout Greece, including and particularly at Athens.

Which had a profound effect on the history of the world.

People who don't understand social leveling at Sparta need to read and/or re-read The Strife of Valour: Austerity and Equality at Sparta.

Let's get back to NW:

It is a setting that is totally lacking in any need for courage.

Bill:

Yes!

That's exactly right!

It is as far from Spartan as anything could possibly ever get.

Right!

Not having courage is easy, and therefore easy to slip into.

That's correct.

That's why the Spartans and other Greeks put so much energy into teaching their kids to be brave.

I can see it especially in mixed company of men and women.

Right!

So -- look -- that's a heterosexualized environment -- and it makes males femmy.

That's why the ancients didn't like heterosexualized environments --

that's why so much of their lives were spent in ALL-MALE milieux.

EVERYTHING was ALL MALE.

Palaistra, Symposion, Phiditia, Agogé -- etc.

Men spent most of their time with other Men.

Other than fucking -- they spent almost no time with women.

Courage and love of aggression is built into the male DNA, but it has to be brought out of the male, in early development.

That's 100% CORRECT!!!

NW -- when you have time -- and probably you should just wait until Christmas week and you have time off --

read The Secret Craft of Warriorhood.

And in particular the section from Lucian.

Just take your time and read it.

Because it discusses all of this.

How "Courage and love of aggression is built into the male, but it has to be brought out of the male, in early development."

They understood that and that's EXACTLY what they did.

And Lucian describes what they did and why -- with their young males.

How they stripped them of their clothes and taught them to Fight.

How they made them go to the various games and even cock-fighting so that they'd constantly be exposed to Fighting and Courage.

NW, it's all in there.

So, when you can, read it -- at your leisure, and giving yourself time to absorb what they're saying.

I believe that it CAN be done later, but it becomes more difficult.

Yes, that's correct.

And my foreign friend says that too.

He says that young males who are deprived of that sort of experience will be significantly less Masculine as adults.

(I found that out from trying to teach wrestling to adults at the wrestling club that I was once part of. Teaching an adult male who has never fought or had to wrestle with another boy in his life, that tangling and tussling with another dude on the center of a wrestling mat is NOT a game requires a LOT of patience.

Right.

Right -- and also very well said!

NO guarantees. It is a fight. It IS aggression. It IS a mentality...a Manly Mentality. Males have Nature's gift of testicles to do this. Use that gift, or lose it.)

It is a fight.

It IS aggression.

It IS a mentality.

A Manly Mentality.

Males have Nature's gift

of testicles

of testicles

to do this.

Use that gift.

Use it.

Use it!

Or lose it.

Right!

Those are all EXCELLENT points.

And that's what the ancients understood.

They had to.

Or they would have been killed and/or enslaved.

They had to teach their boys to FIGHT.

No way around it.

"Males have Nature's gift of testicles to do this."

"Use that gift,

or lose it."

That's the TRUTH.

The TRUTH our guys need to understand.

You know, NW, orginally I was going to use this pic

for "lose it."

But the problem is that a picture like this

is misleading.

And particularly to our guys, who don't understand the nature of Fighting because they refuse to get any real-world experience of it.

This guy HAS Fought.

Yes, he was knocked down, but then he picked himself back up:

He got up --

And he'll Fight again.

So he has NOT lost that Natural and Divine Gift.

The Divine Gift of Fighting.

The Divine Gift of Testicles.

The Divine Gift of Manliness.

The Divine Gift of Manly Mentality.

As you've said, NW, just getting into the cage is a Victory.

So -- this guy hasn't lost it -- and he has has nothing to be ashamed of -- or to apologize for.

Once again, it's our guys who are the problem.

Those same old, tired, males-in-the-mirror.

Who each and every day lose Nature's -- and God's -- gift of testicles.

Because other than in jerking off, they won't use that gift.

The vast majority of them won't lift a finger to defend themselves.

Let alone Fight.

And yet Fighting is the one thing which would actually change -- transform -- their lives.

FIGHT!

So guys -- this is what WARRIOR NW said:

"to have Courage--willingness to face the unknown, willingness to risk defeat. . . . NO guarantees. It is a fight. It IS aggression. It IS a mentality...a Manly Mentality. Males have Nature's gift of testicles to do this. Use that gift, or lose it."

Courage is a willingness to face the unknown, to risk defeat.

There are no guarantees.

It is a Fight.

It IS Aggression.

It IS a mentality.

A MANLY MENTALITY.

This too is a picture of Courage, of a Manly Mentality:

And both these guys have won.

They've both demonstrated their Courage, their Manly Mentality, by Fighting.

And again, in that respect, BOTH Men have Won.

The terrible thing is -- that's something you guys will never know.

Yet without that Manly Mentality you're not a Man.

You're -- at best -- a "male."

And that's all you'll ever be.

And yet you could be -- so much more.

So very much more.

Let's get back to NW.

Who has Fought.

NW:

Being in that un-masculine Catholic setting is an easy retreat from the real world. It is a sanctuary....a very protected setting....LIKE A WOMB.

Bill:

Well-said!

It is easy to hide in a church setting.

Right.

Which is why there are all those "gay" priests.

Many of whom molest kids.

And only some of whom -- protected as they so often are by the Catholic hierarchy -- get caught.

12 years in a Catholic church and Catholic schools was like 12 years in a Catholic Womb. For me, stepping out of a Catholic school was like stepping outside into a blizzard or wind storm at 18 years of age.

Right.

Good question.

Right.

Manliness was a given.

NW, the reason I've started using the word "Manliness" is that when I read classicists writing less than a hundred years ago -- they use that word -- ALL THE TIME --

to explain ancient concepts.

Yet in our culture, the word is basically forbidden.

So this is all VERY recent.

Probably AFTER WW2, is when the unraveling of manliness began to accelerate, for various reasons.

Right.

I will say that it is educational to sit through the Catholic Mass ritual, and to sit through a gathering of unmanly people. It is better to NOT be ignorant of the rapid growth of femmyness in men in American Life.
Oh yeah.
Be aware. Be aware. Be aware.

Right.

And NW -- there has to be a religious / spiritual force which counters the femmies.

The protestants on the whole are no different, including the evangelicals.

Their churches are dominated by feminist females.

So -- I mean it when I talk about Ares -- The Warrior God.

Ares is the God of Manliness.

That's what and who He is.

He's Manhood.

He holds the Sceptre of Manliness -- He rules the Realm of Manhood.

And He's about Fighting.

Struggle.

Strife.

And it's extremely significant that to the Greeks, Areté comes from Ares.

Areté = Manly Excellence, Manly Virtue, Valour and Fighting Prowess.

That's the definition.

And ARES is the source of that Manly Excellence, that Manly Virtue, that Manly Valour.

He's the God of Manliness.

He is Manliness.

So -- we could, for example, combine a Fight School with a Shrine or Temple to Ares -- that would be natural.

The ancients routinely held religious ceremonies at the Fight School.

For instance, in Plato's Lysis, which is about male-male friendship and love, Sokrates goes to a Palaistra on a day when they're observing the "Hermaia" -- which is a festival dedicated to Hermes, and his Herms.

Hermes

Herms = Phalluses.

Herm

So: Herms were frankly phallic statues -- this, again, is a Herm --

which were found in every Palaistra / Fight School in the ancient world.

Palaistra: Herm on left, Boxer on right

Herms too were worshipped -- worshipped at the Fight School -- and worshipped as a symbol of Male Sexuality, of Man's Creative Power, of Man's Aggressive Power.

A victorious athlete and Nike join in crowning a Herm

Manly Aggression, Manly Sexuality.

So, the day of Sokrates' conversation with Lysis, there are, as it happens, all sorts of rituals -- among the naked boys and young Men -- dedicated to Hermes and the Herms.

And Sokrates talks with the guys who are standing about, as Jaeger puts it, in the Athlete's Spartan Nakedness -- and off and on, one of them will be summoned away by a priest or other official to take part in a ritual.

So it was all very integrated.

And natural.

It wasn't like Fighting and Religion were split off from each other.

It was the opposite.

The great Nude Fight Sport festivals were also Religious festivals.

And we need to re-integrate the two.

Once again:

Manly Aggression, Manly Sexuality.

The ancients understood the relationship between the two.

And that relationship is profound.

So -- given that our Man2Man Lovemaking is Combative and Aggressive, it's only natural and proper that we should think of and offer every such act as an act of worship of and to the Warrior God.

And that's true of Fighting too.

The ancients ALWAYS sacrificed to the Gods before they Fought -- whether on the battlefield or in the Ring of Naked Valour, the Ring of Boxing, Wrestling, and Pankration.

And we should too.

So, Guys:

I've shown you, and have been showing you, literally for years, that there existed a MAJORITY culture, a DOMINANT culture, created by MEN, of MEN, and most especially FOR MEN, that was Manly and Phallic, Martial and Faithful.

That it abhorred anal penetration and promiscuity, while honoring Fidelity and Phallus.

That's what the culture was.

And that Manly, Majority, Culture of Masculine Love was what powered the "Greek Miracle," the greatest flowering of thought and achievement the world has ever known.

It was also militarily successful -- stopping cold the mightiest empire of its day, and, eventually, conquering that empire.

You, by contrast, are living under the thumb of an effeminate, minority subculture.

If you're gay-identified, you think of it as the dominant culture, because within your world it is.

But it's not elsewhere, and need not be for you.

You are LETTING it boss you around, you are complicit in your own oppression.

Because you are, as Robert Loring has said, defeated in your own mind.

For that reason, instead of doing what you should be doing, which is

  1. Supporting this site through Donation;

  2. Establishing Regional Chapters; and

  3. Training in Fight Sport --

You're instead wasting your time -- and your very LIVES -- fooling around with analist organizations like the Radical Faeries and the Jacks.

Such organizations will ALWAYS DISAPPOINT AND DEFEAT YOU.

ALWAYS.

They are built on anal and promiscuity and effeminacy.

Even when they say they're not -- as NW's experience so clearly shows:

So many of the guys at the Jacks are not manly enough for me. AND a number of them are into anal and looking to pick someone up for it, even though it's strictly not allowed at an event. It becomes a total turn off. Some guys will ask you if you ever fuck. Butt fuckers are persistent. I always reject them in an instant.

I just cannot get turned up by a thin, unmanly guy, ESPECIALLY if he acts femmy. It totally turns me off. I have thought that way since I was a very small boy.

Of course NW's thought that way -- since he was a little boy.

We've ALL thought that way.

And that's because we're MEN.

As MEN, we have an inner sense of what it means to be a MAN.

And that's what we look for in other males.

If we don't see it -- we're not interested.

And if the male is femmy -- we're totally turned off.

Not because of some social prejudice.

But because We're MEN.

MEN need the company of other MEN.

That's what MEN need, and that's what they will always seek out.

Our culture calls that inner sense -- Masculinity.

And the Hallmark of Masculinity is -- FIGHTING SPIRIT.

FIGHTING SPIRIT.

It's what puts the War in Warrior.

FIGHTING SPIRIT IS WARRIOR SPIRIT.

Is Fighting Spirit metaphorical?

NO.

As we discussed in The Secret Craft of Warriorhood, and as the Spartans so well understood, Fighting Spirit is real.

It's within you.

But its manifestation is in large part a matter of training:

The expression of Fighting Spirit requires that you KNOW HOW TO FIGHT.

As NW says: "Courage and love of aggression is built into the male DNA, but it has to be brought out of the male. . ."

Once again, as we discussed in The Secret Craft of Warriorhood, the Spartans and the other Greeks understood that Fighting Spirit is latent in the male, and has to be brought out and encouraged through training.

Training in Fight Sport -- training in Aggression:

Plutarch:

[In their Herds, the Spartan boys were] accustomed to live together and be brought up together, playing and learning as a group. The captaincy of the Herd was conferred upon the boy who displayed the soundest judgement and the best fighting spirit. The others kept their eyes on him, responded to his instructions, and endured their punishments from him, so that altogether this training served as practice in learning ready obedience. Moreover, as they exercised, boys were constantly watched by their elders, who were always spurring them on to fight and contend with one another; in this their chief object was to get to know each boy's character, in particular how bold he was, and how far he was likely to stand his ground in combat and struggle.

~ Life of Lycurgus, translated by Talbot

The boy with the best fighting spirit was made Captain of the Herd.

While the Men constantly spurred the boys on to Fight and Contend with one another.

The idea, again, was to *train* the kids to be Brave:

Man differs little from man by nature, but he is best who trains in the hardest school.

~King Archidamus of Sparta, quoted by Thucydides

Xenophon, Athenian aristocrat, professional soldier, Spartan confidante:

I notice that as those who do not train the body cannot perform the functions proper to the body, so those who do not train the soul cannot perform the functions of the soul: for they cannot do what they ought to do nor avoid what they ought not to do.

And as we'll see, this idea of recognising and then bringing out and developing what is latent in the Man -- in his soul -- is one that's taken up -- and in spades -- by Plato.

Warrior NW:

Courage and love of aggression is built into the male DNA, but it has to be brought out of the male, in early development. I believe that it CAN be done later, but it becomes more difficult.

I found that out from trying to teach wrestling to adults at the wrestling club that I was once part of. Use that gift, or lose it.

Use it or lose it.

Most of you never use it -- so you've lost it.

That's just the way it is.

Like NW says, you're "infatuated by wrestling" and Fighting, but you could NEVER do it.

Because you've let your Fighting Spirit -- atrophy.

Through lack of use, and lack of training.

As NW says:

Fighting requires the male to be aggressive, decisive, quick thinking, merciless, until the match is over, and most of all to have Courage--willingness to face the unknown, willingness to risk defeat.

You have to be AGGRESSIVE, DECISIVE, QUICK THINKING, AND MERCILESS.

You have to have COURAGE -- willingness to face the unknown, willingness to risk defeat.

NW:

NO guarantees. It is a fight. It IS aggression. It IS a mentality...a Manly Mentality. Males have Nature's gift of testicles to do this. Use that gift, or lose it.

NO guarantees.

Yet that's what all of you want.

Guarantees.

You don't want to take a chance.

YOU'RE COMPLETE AND UTTER COWARDS.

Pindar: "Great risk does not take hold of a cowardly man."

You're ALL COWARDS.

It's fine by you if Bill Weintraub speaks up on your behalf and then gets pummelled all over the internet.

BUT YOU WON'T SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF.

And as a consequence, YOU DON'T GET ANYWHERE.

NOWHERE.

YOU'RE WORSE OFF NOW THAN YOU WERE ELEVEN YEARS AGO.

You need to DONATE.

Right now.

$10 now and $10 this time next month.

And every month.

And then you have to start a Regional Chapter.

So you're not dicking around with some faggot buttboy organization filled with shitqueens who'll give you HIV.

Or Hep C or something else.

And then walk out on you.

You need to stop looking for FIDELITY among the promiscuous.

DUH.

You're not going to find it.

DOUBLE DUH.

And yes, it should be a Regional Chapter of THE MAN2MAN ALLIANCE because The MAN2MAN ALLIANCE program is the one you need.

Frot, Fidelity, Manliness.

You can NOT compromise on any of those.

But knowing you, that's what you'll be tempted to do.

Unless someone holds your feet to the fire -- and that someone is me.

You need to follow the program without wavering:

Frot, Fidelity, Manliness.

And you need to learn how to FIGHT.

Not metaphorically, but actually.

That means training in a Martial Art.

Or other Fight Sport.

Doing that will enable you to find your BALLS.

Which have gone missing over the years.

Don't do that -- AND YOU'LL NEVER HAVE WHAT YOU WANT.

BECAUSE YOU WON'T DESERVE IT.

NW:

I realized that what has always turned me on was the sensation of some kind of aggression from another dude while going cock2cock. . . .

What do you think?

Do you think NW's the only MAN who gets turned on by "the sensation of some kind of aggression from another dude while going cock2cock"?

Who gets turned on by "wrestling around"?

ALL MEN get turned on by that.

But -- in order to aggress -- you have to know how to aggress.

Once again: Not metaphorically, but actually.

That means training in a Martial Art.

Or other Fight Sport.

You have to train.

You have to DO SOMETHING.

So -- this is the Program:

If you'll do those things, a month from now, or a year from now, or a couple years from now, you'll be in a very different place.

If you don't do them -- Christmas of 2012 will look an awful lot like Christmas of 2010.

So -- Bill -- that's me, that's Mr Weintraub --

is really DISGUSTED with you.

He's ready to CLOSE THE SITES permanently because you're so stupid and selfish and stingy.

WARRIOR NW:

It is a fight. It IS aggression. It IS a mentality...a Manly Mentality. Males have Nature's gift of testicles to do this. Use that gift, or lose it.

"It IS a mentality...a Manly Mentality."

A Manly Mentality.

That Manly Mentality requires Balls.

Those Balls are part of your Manhood.

Which is a Divine Gift.

If you neglect that Gift, as we've much discussed, the Warrior God will take it from you.

And He won't give it back.

Use it -- or lose it.

A Manly Mentality.

Right now, 99.99% of you have a femmy mentality.

Which is proving to be, for you, a femmy *fatality*.

Because femmy mentality = femmy fatality.

You're self-oppressing fags -- defeated in your own minds.

FIGHT BACK.

Re-claim your Manhood.

And your Manly Mentality.

Before it's lost forever.

Once again:

You can have a Manly Mentality.

FIGHT!

Or a femmy fatality.

And I'll know who has what in just a few days when I see what comes in -- in donations.

Guess what?

I'm NOT working with "guys" who have a femmy fatality.

Why should I?

You're already dead.

You're NOT worth the trouble.

You wanna know who's worth the trouble?

Warrior NW -- and Warrior Man Brian Hulme.

As soon as Warrior NW's last article had been posted, Warrior Brian sent in a reply which was right on the money.

He understood that the Greeks taught their boys to be combative and aggressive, that competition, the Agon, was core to Greek life; and that, as a consequence, it was essential for the boys and Men to exercise what Brian so rightly called "Warrior self control."

Brian understood both sides of the discussion -- the Fighting part and the Virtuous part -- and summed them up very neatly in a couple of short paragraphs.

Warrior Brian is well worth working with.

Are you?

You need to choose.

You can have

This picture:

is of the Leonidas statue at Thermopylai.

Here's another view:

This view, and very rightly, emphasizes his Testicles -- per Warrior NW, God's Gift, Nature's Gift to Men.

A gift which you can either use or loose.

That you have any Freedom at all -- is because Leonidas USED his TESTICLES.

He went to Thermopylai and Fought and Died so that Greece could remain Free.

He said so.

He said, "I plan to die for the Greeks."

And that's what he did.

And Leonidas, remember, was a Spartan, which means he was a social leveler.

The Spartans called each other hoi homoioi -- the Equals.

The Warriors were all Equal.

The only quality which might distinguish one from another was -- Valour.

This is the program:

Do it --

or die.

And yes, I know, Leonidas died.

The difference is that he died NOBLY.

L E O N I D A S
Spartan Hero

Leonidas lived -- and died -- a Hero.

You won't.

Your death will be ignoble because your life has been ignoble.

It makes a difference.

It makes a difference what you do in this life.

It makes a difference how you live.

Get with the program.

Now.

While you still can.

You think femmy fatality will never happen to you.

So did 600,000 other Americans.

That's the sorry Truth.

It was my own innate understanding of the essentially Combative and Aggressive nature of Men, and my own instinctual relating of that to the testicles, which produced those fantasies and gave them so much power in my life.

In this Dialogue, written in the first century AD by Lucian but presenting an imagined conversation between the *sixth century BC* Athenian lawgiver Solon and a Scythian visitor to Athens named Anacharsis, we get some idea of what that training was like -- starting with Athenian kids, and then progressing to Spartan youth:

Anacharsis: And another thing, my dear Solon, why are those young men acting in this way? Look, some of them are grappling and tripping each other, others are choking their friends and twisting their limbs, rolling about in the mud and wallowing like pigs. But before they began to do this, I noticed they first took off their clothes, then put oil on themselves, and in a peaceful fashion took turns in rubbing each other. But now, experiencing some emotion I do not understand, they have lowered their heads and are crashing into each other, and butting their heads together like rams! And look! There is one who has just seized the other by the legs and thrown him down; then he flopped on him and did not allow him to get up, but shoved him down into the mud. And now he is finally twisting his legs around the other person's waist and choking him with his arm under his throat. The other is slapping him on the shoulder, trying to ask him, I suppose, not to choke him to death. They do not avoid getting covered with dirt even to save the oil, but on the contrary wipe it off, and smearing themselves with mud and rivers of perspiration they make themselves ridiculous, in my opinion, by sliding in and out of each other's hands like eels.

Others are acting in the same way in the open part of the courtyard. However, these are not in the mud, but they have this deep sand in the pit which they sprinkle on themselves and each other, just like roosters, so that they cannot break out of their grasp, I imagine, since the sand decreases the slipperiness and offers a surer grip on a dry skin.

Others also covered with dust are standing up straight and striking and kicking each other. See that one there! Poor fellow, he seems to be ready to spit out a mouthful of teeth considering how full of blood and sand his mouth is; he has got a blow to the jaw, as you can see for yourself. But the official there does not separate them and stop the fight -- at least I assume he is an official from his scarlet cloak. On the contrary he encourages them and cheers the one who struck that blow.

All around different people are all exercising: some raise their knees as if running, although they remain in the same place, and as they jump up they kick the air.

What I want to know is, what reason do they have for doing this? It seems to me these actions are almost insane, and there is no one who can easily persuade me that people who act like this have not lost all their senses.

[Solon explains that customs differ from one land to another. He then explains to Anacharsis what is happening.]

Solon: This place, dear Anacharsis, is what we call a gymnasion and it and is sacred to Lykeian Apollo. You can see his statue, leaning against a stele, holding his bow in his left hand. His right arm is bent above his head as if the artist were showing the God resting, as if he had completed some laborious task. As for those exercises in the nude, the one done in the mud is called wrestling. Those in the dust are also wrestling. Those who strike each other standing upright we call pankratiasts. We have other athletic events: we have contests in boxing, diskos, and the long jump, and the winner is considered superior to his fellows and takes the prize.

Anacharsis: These prizes of yours now; what are they?

Solon: At Olympia there is a crown of wild olive; at Isthmia, one of pine; at Nemea, one woven of celery; at the Pythian Games, laurel berries sacred to the god, and here at home at the Panathenaic Games, oil from olive trees which grow in the sacred precincts. What are you laughing at, Anacharsis? Do these prizes seem valueless to you?

[Solon explains the symbolic value of the prizes, justifies the pursuit of athletics, the education of the citizens. Then Anacharsis asks Solon to explain the government of Athens.]

Solon: It is not easy, my friend, to explain everything at once in concise form, but if you will take one thing at a time you will learn everything about our belief in the gods, as well as our attitude toward parents, marriage, or anything else.

I will now explain our theory about young men and how we treat them from the time when they begin to know the difference between right and wrong and are entering manhood and sustaining hardships, so that you may learn why we require them to undergo these exercises and force them to subject their bodies to toil, not just because of the athletic games and the prizes they may win there, for few of them have the ability to do that, but so that they may try to gain a greater good for the entire city and for themselves. For there is another contest set up for all good citizens and the crown is not made of pine nor of wild olive nor of celery, but is one which includes all of man's happiness, that is to say, freedom for each person individually and for the state in general: wealth, glory, pleasure in our traditional feast days, having the entire family safe from harm, and in a word, to have the best of all the blessings one could have from the gods.

All this happiness is woven into the crown to which I referred and is acquired in the contest to which these exhausting exercises lead.

[Solon goes into more detail about the training of young men and about the responsibility of the citizens.]

Solon: As for physical training, which you particularly wanted to hear about, we proceed as follows. When the boys reach an age when they are no longer soft and uncoordinated, we strip them naked. We do this because first, we think they should get used to the weather, learning to live with different seasons, so they are not bothered by the heat nor do they yield to the cold. Then we massage them with olive oil and condition the skin. For since we see that leather which is softened by olive oil does not easily crack and is much stronger, even though it is not alive, why should we not think that live bodies would benefit from oil? Next we have thought up different kinds of athletics and have appointed coaches for each type. We teach one how to box, another how to compete in the pankration, so that they can become used to hard work, to stand up to blows face to face, and not to yield through fear of injury.

This creates two valuable traits in our young men: it makes them brave in the face of danger and unsparing of their bodies, and it also makes them strong and vigorous. Those who wrestle and push against each other learn how to fall safely and spring up nimbly, to endure pushing, grappling, twisting, and choking, and to be able to lift their opponent off the ground. They are not learning useless skills but they get the one thing which is the first and most important thing in life: through this training their bodies become stronger and capable of enduring pain. There is another thing too which is not unimportant. From this training they acquire skills which they may need some day in war. For it is clear that if a man so trained grapples with an enemy, he will trip and throw him more quickly and if he is thrown he will know how to regain his feet as easily as possible. For we prepare our men, Anacharsis, for the supreme contest, war, and we expect to have much better soldiers out of young men who have had this training, that is, the previous conditioning and training of naked bodies, which makes them not only stronger and healthier, more agile and fit, but also causes them to outweigh their opponents.

You can see, I should think, the results of this, what they are like when armed, or even without weapons how they would strike terror in their enemies. Our troops are not fat, pale, and useless nor are they white and scrawny ... enervated by lying in the shade, simultaneously shivering and streaming with rivers of sweat, gasping beneath their helmets, particularly if the sun, as now, is burning with noontime heat. What use could people be who get thirsty and cannot endure dust; soldiers who panic if they see blood, who die of terror before they come close enough to throw their spears or to close with the enemy? But our troops have skin of high color, darkened by the sun, and faces like real men; they display great vigor, fire, and virility. They glow with good health, and are neither shriveled skeletons nor excessively heavy, but they have been carved to perfect symmetry; they have used up and sweated off useless and excess flesh, and that which is left is strong, supple, and free, and they vigorously keep this healthy condition. For just as the winnowers do with wheat, so our athletes do with their bodies, removing the chaff and the husks and leaving the grain in a clean pile.

Through training like this a man can't avoid being healthy and can stand up indefinitely under stress. Such a man would sweat only after some time, and he would seldom be seen to be ill. Suppose someone were to take two torches and throw one into the grain and the other into the straw and chaff -- you see, I am returning to the figure of the winnower. The straw, I think, would burst into flames much more quickly, but the grain would burn slowly with no large flames blazing up nor would it burn all at once, but it would smoulder slowly and eventually it too would be burned.

Neither disease nor fatigue could easily attack and overcome such a body or easily defeat it. For it has good inner resources which defend it against attacks from outside, so as not to let them in, neither does it admit the sun or the cold to its hurt. To avoid yielding to hardships, great vigor springs up within, something prepared long in advance and held in reserve for time of need. This vigor fills up at once and waters the body in a crisis and makes it strong for a long time. For the previous training in bearing strain and hardship does not weaken their strength but increases it, and when you fan it the fire burns stronger.

We train them to run, getting them to endure long distances as well as speeding them up for swiftness in the sprints. This running is not done on a firm springy surface but in deep sand, where it is not easy to place one's foot forcefully and not to push off from it, since the foot slips against the yielding sand. We train them to jump over ditches, if they have to, or any other obstacles, and in addition we train them to do this even when they carry lead weights as large as they can hold. They also compete in the javelin throw for distance. In the gymnasium you also saw another athletic implement, bronze, circular, like a tiny shield with no bar or straps. You handled it as it lay there and expressed the view that it was heavy and hard to hold on to because it was so smooth. Well, they throw this up in the air both high and out, competing to see who can throw the longest and pass beyond the others. This exercise strengthens the shoulders and builds up the arms and legs.

As for this mud and dust, which originally seemed so amusing to you, my friend, listen while I tell you why it is used. First, their fall will not be on unyielding dirt but they will fall safely on soft ground. Next, their slipperiness has to be greater when they sweat in the mud. You likened them to eels, but the facts are neither useless nor humorous: it adds not a little to strength of the sinews when they are forced to hold firmly to people in this condition when they are trying to slip away. Do not think it is easy to pick up a sweaty man in the mud, covered with oil and trying to get out of your arms. All these skills, as I said earlier, are useful in combat, if it were necessary to pick up a wounded friend and carry him easily to safety or to seize an enemy and bring him back in your arms. And for this reason we train them beyond what is necessary, so that when they have practiced hard tasks they may do smaller ones with much greater facility.

We believe the dust is used for the opposite reason than the oil is, that is, so that a competitor may not slip out of his opponent's grasp. For after they have been trained in the mud to hold fast to something which is escaping from them because of its slipperiness, they then practice escaping out of the arms of their opponent, no matter how impossibly firm they may be held. Furthermore when this dust is used liberally it checks the perspiration and makes their strength last longer and furnishes protection against harm from drafts which otherwise attack the body when the pores are open. Besides, the dust rubs off the accumulation of dirt and makes the skin gleam.

I should dearly like to stand one of those white-skinned fellows who live in the shade beside one of our boys who work out in the Lykeion, and after I had washed off the dust and the mud, ask you which one you would like to resemble. For I know that you would choose at first glance, without hesitation, even without putting either through any tests, the one which is solid and hard rather than soft, weak, and pale, because what little blood he has has been withdrawn into the interior of his body.

[Anacharsis then ridicules the idea that athletic training could be useful in war. Why not save your strength, he asks. Solon explains that strength cannot be saved like a bottle of wine; it must be constantly used.]

Anacharsis: I just don't understand what you said, Solon. It is too intellectual for me and requires a sharp mind and keen insight. But above all, tell me this, why, in the Olympic Games and at Isthmia and Delphi and elsewhere, where so many competitors, you say, assemble to see these young men compete, you never have a contest with weapons but you bring them before the spectators all naked and exhibit them getting kicked and punched, and then, if they have won, give them berries and wild olives? It would be worth knowing why you do this.

Solon: My dear Anacharsis, we do this because we think that their enthusiasm for athletics will increase if they see that those who excel at them are honored and are presented to crowds of Greeks by heralds. Because they are to appear stripped before so many people, they try to get into good condition, so that when they are naked they will not be ashamed, and each one works to make himself capable of winning. As for the prizes, as I said earlier, they are not insignificant: to be praised by the spectators, to be a recognized celebrity, and to be pointed out as the best of one's group. As a result of these prizes, many of the spectators who are of the right age for competition go away completely in love with courage and struggle. If someone should remove love of glory from our lives, what good would we ever achieve, Anacharsis, or who would strive to accomplish some shining deed? But now it is possible for you to imagine from these games what sort of men these would be under arms, fighting for fatherland and children and wives and temples, when they show so much desire for victory in competing for laurel berries and wild olives.

Furthermore, how would you feel if you should observe fights between quails and between roosters here among us, and see the great interest which is shown in them? Wouldn't you laugh, particularly if you should learn that we do this in accordance with our laws and all men of military age are instructed to be present and to see these birds fight until they are exhausted? But it is no laughing matter, for eagerness for danger creeps insensibly into their souls so that they try not to seem less courageous and bold than the roosters nor to give in too soon because of injury or fatigue or any other distress.

As for trying them in armed combat and seeing them receive wounds -- never! It is brutal and dreadfully wrong, and in addition it is economically unfeasible to destroy the bravest, whom we could better use against our enemies.

Since you tell me, Anacharsis, that you expect to travel to the rest of Greece, if you get to Sparta, remember not to laugh at them nor think that they have no purpose when they compete in a theater, rushing together and striking each other, fighting over a ball, or when they go into a place surrounded by water [known as Plantanistas, or Plane-Tree Grove], choose up sides, and fight as if in actual war, although as naked as we Athenians are, until one team drives the other out of the enclosure into the water, the Sons of Herakles beating the Sons of Lykurgos or vice versa; after this contest there is peace and no one would strike another. In particular, do not laugh if you see them being whipped at the altar, streaming with blood, with mothers and fathers standing by, not at all bothered by what is happening but on the contrary threatening them if they do not hold up under the blows, urging them to bear up under the pain as long as possible, and to be strong under this hideous treatment. To tell the truth, many have died in these contests, not thinking it manly to yield before the eyes of their friends and relatives while they are still alive, no, not even to flinch. You will see honors paid to statues of people like this erected at public expense by the state of Sparta.
